Short version
- Graffio is from Hornet Plugins, and it was promoted as free for a limited time.
- Promotions end, so confirm it is still free on the Hornet official page before downloading.
- Test it in your own mix before you decide it belongs in your template.
I am not describing Graffio's controls or sound, because I cannot verify them here. The rest of this page is a repeatable routine for taking a new free effect from download to decision.
Confirm the deal
- Go straight to the developer's site instead of clicking a link in a forwarded message.
- Look at the price shown at checkout. If it says zero, proceed. If it shows a price, the promotion ended.
- Note whether an account, email signup or licence key is required, and whether the licence is permanent.
Install without drama
- Choose the format your DAW uses (VST3 is common on Windows and Mac hosts, AU for Logic and GarageBand).
- Keep the installer and licence email in one folder for later reinstalls.
- Scan for the plugin in a blank project first.
A test routine that takes 20 minutes
Round 1: three source types
Try the plugin on each of these and keep notes:
| Source | Setting approach | Verdict question |
|---|---|---|
| Drum loop | Start subtle, about a quarter of the range | Punch or blur? |
| Vocal or lead | Small changes only | Clearer or more harsh? |
| Full mix | Barely audible amounts | Cohesion or distortion? |
Round 2: level match
Trim the output so the processed and bypassed versions have the same average loudness. Then A/B at least eight times while looking away from the screen.
Round 3: chain position
Try it before and after a compressor. Effects that add harmonics or colour often behave differently when the compressor sees the coloured signal versus the clean one.
Round 4: the next-day test
Come back tomorrow with fresh ears and bypass it. If you miss it, keep it. If you do not notice, delete it.
Worked example: a lo-fi beat
Build a quick 80 BPM lo-fi loop: dusty kick, snare with the top rolled off at 6 kHz, a detuned electric piano chord loop and vinyl noise. Route everything to a single bus and insert Graffio, or whichever effect you are testing, at the end of the chain. Try low intensity first, then double it and hear where it stops helping. Bounce eight bars with settings at zero, one quarter and one half, name the files clearly, and listen to them back-to-back at the same volume the next morning. Write down which one you would want to hear in a finished track. This kind of test takes ten minutes and prevents you from committing to an effect based on the excitement of a free download.
Repeat with a very different source, such as a clean acoustic guitar, to see how versatile the effect is.
Signs you should skip it
- It only sounds better when louder.
- It adds noise or hum you cannot remove.
- It is heavy on CPU relative to what it does.
- You already own a plugin that does the same job as well.
Troubleshooting
- Plugin missing after install: confirm the format matches your DAW, then trigger a full rescan.
- Settings reset when you reopen a project: save a preset manually and load it, or file a note with the developer.
- Crackles when many instances run: freeze tracks or raise the buffer size.
- Licence not recognised: re-enter the key exactly as sent, and check that the system clock is correct.
Genre tips
Hip hop and lo-fi work suits heavy colour on samples. Rock and pop mixes usually need small moves on vocals and buses. EDM producers can push harder on individual synths, but should keep the kick and bass clean.
Managing your plugin folder after the test
Once you have a verdict, act on it the same day. Keepers go into a favourites folder or a colour-coded tag in your DAW browser, along with the preset names from your test. Situational tools get a note saying what they are good for, so you remember why they exist. Deletions should include the plugin file, its presets and any leftover installer, which reclaims disk space and shortens plugin scans. A lean folder of twenty tools you know well beats two hundred you never open, and it makes sessions load faster, which matters more than most producers expect.
Back up your licence emails and keys in a password manager or an encrypted note, not in a plain text file on the desktop.
FAQ
How can I tell if the free offer is still live?
Check the developer's official product page and cart. If the price is not zero, the deal has ended.
Should I use it on the master?
Only after trying it on individual buses, and always with level-matching. Master processing is unforgiving.
What if it clashes with another plugin?
Try reordering the chain, and check the DAW's plugin delay compensation setting. Restart the project if strange behaviour continues.
